Chef, restaurateur and author Leonardo Curti was born in Italy. Curti grew up in a fishing town known as Cariati in the region of Calabria. His passion about food began around the age of 6. As an apprentice to his grandfather Alfonso, he was helping him and the local townspeople picking up the eggs, cleaning the fish, going to the butcher and to the local markets for cheeses and produce. Beginning as a dishwasher at a restaurant in Germany, he then moved to Siena (Tuscany) to apprentice with the Luppoli family at Malborghetto di Siena, a locals favorite. In 1992, after completing the Italian army, he moved to the United States and worked for restaurants such as Il Giardino, Cicada, Celestino and Pane Caldo. In 1997 he and his business partner Daniele Serra opened Trattoria Grappolo in Santa Ynez. A destination to dine at and a favorite local hangout.
